Lay is a queer genderfluid storyteller of the Gumbaynggirr and Gunggandji nations, and they are South Sea Islander of Vanuatu descent. Born in Gimuy (Cairns), their early childhood was spent in Yarrabah Aboriginal Community before moving to the Mid North Coast of NSW. They have a Bachelor of Arts in English & Theatre Studies and Indigenous Studies from the University of Melbourne. 

In 2022, they won the black&write! fellowship for their manuscript WEAVING US TOGETHER which was published by Hachette in July 2025.

Lay has also been published in Nangamay Mana Djurali: First Nations LGBQTIA+ Poetry Collection, Australian Poetry Journal, Cordite Poetry Review, Soft Stir Magazine, More than Melanin, and by Red Room Poetry. 

Lay was the Emerging Producer for Blak & Bright's 2024 Festival.

They are based on Dunghutti Country and spend their days working, writing, and walking to the beach.
