Artist Statement
My inspiration behind the art for EVERY:WHEN was wanting to capture how time and place can tell a story. Growing up by the river in Echuca on Yorta Yorta Country, two main things I was told have stuck with me: "When the first frost hits the grass, it's yabbie season" and "Move like water". This is an ethos I carry with me every day. Now, after living on Wurundjeri Country for almost eight years, I've come to know more about the seasonal changes of the Kulin calendar and want to highlight them whenever I can.
EVERY:WHEN takes place during tadpole season, or Poorneet in the language of the Wurundjeri people. During Poorneet, snow melts from the mountains and pours into the rivers and floodplains. Flowers come into bloom, the most iconic of which is the Murnong Daisy. During this time, you can hear the calls of the Pied Currawong and the croaks of the frogs as they lay their spawn.
I wanted to capture all the changes moving through Country, from water and soil, to the treetops and sky.
